My 3 year old Boo is really into dogs so when I found pink and brown fabric with dogs all over it, I knew that was going to be the theme of her school bag. It's medium weight cotton by Debbie Mumm. I selected brown polka dot fabric and the 2nd find du jour was fabric with doggy commands that perfectly complemented the theme and colors of the bag. I left Joann's feeling giddy with my fabric selection and excited about the project. I used the Margaret bag tutorial by oh, fransson! and it was a lot of fun to make. Her instructions and pictures are very easy to follow. I didn't have a single "say what?" moment so highly recommend the bag. I modified it slightly by shortening the strap, added a pocket to the outside, and added a cup holder to keep Boo's thermos upright (althought it doesn't leak, just a safeguard). I accidentally bought non-fusible interfacing and only had enough fusible at home for the exterior of the bag so instead of "gluing" the flannel lining to the exterior with fusible interfacing, I cut the flannel to the same size as the exterior and sewed it on. I didn't encounter any problems nor see anything weird with this modification. You can't see it but I embroidered Boo's name onto a small white felt bone and attached it to one of the interior pockets. I am very happy with the results. It's just the right size to hold a change of clothes, her thermos, and bento box plus some space for stuff she'll bring home. When I gave her the bag this morning, she said, "wow". Nice!
Until next time,
