My first re-sizing experience

Hi everyone,

I had never completely re-sized an item before and decided to try my hand with a large Superman t-shirt from my local op shop ($2). I'd always wanted a Superman tee so this seemed like the right time to try out some sewing skills! Things didn't go according to plan though (you may remember my last post which cited an initial disaster). Anyway, I devoted an evening to working out what the problem was and after shortening the length from the shoulder seams, sewing in the side seams and fiddling for ages with the armholes it finally feels like it worked. I'm not sure how much I will love it in the long term (I can see an applique in the future onto a different top altogether) but for the moment it's really comfy and I have that lovely feeling of mission accomplished. I have to say that in one evening I feel like I learnt so much just by giving it a go!

A Simple Solution

    My son needed a pair of black athletic shorts for his soccer "uniform". He's only 3 and plays in a mini-league with only 8 games, so I didn't want to spend much on gear. I couldn't find black shorts at my favorite second-hand stores or the cheap box stores, because all the summer stuff has been clearanced, so I improvised. I found a pair of lightweight knit pants that were too short for him, but fit at the waist. I picked off the side pockets, and cut them down into shorts. I used another pair of shorts as a guide for length, since he was at school while I was sewing. I used a three step zig-zag stitch for the hem, so the seam lies flat, but still stretches.

Funky Revamped Skirt

Here is another Wardrobe Refashion I crafted using a pair of old jeans.  I was going for a funky & comfy skirt...here is the "before" shot...

 

...and here is the "after" shot!  I now have a funky revamped skirt with a cool little pocket, made especially to fit my cell phone.  =)

Bubbly Berry Skirt

I have recently been doing a bit of dyeing with elderberries and dyeing with blackberries for Historic Crafts.

This lead to the dyeing of a piece of raw silk which I transformed into the Bubbly Berry Skirt which you can read more about on my blog 'Grey Duckling'. I have been thinking about doing a quick tutorial on the bubbly skirt effect, which I love btw, but I don't know if anyone would be interested. Old Shirt To Skirt With Pockets

I decided to remake this much to large shirt into a skirt for my daughter. I loved the detail on the fabric and the top of the shirt made it very easy to remake. I decided to try making pockets with the old sleeves. I cut the sleeves off a bit, tucked them in the shirt and sewed the ends. It actually worked really well! The skirt is made to be high waisted but my daughter keeps scooting it down because "It isn't comfortable like that!" Either way it turned out adorable and she loves it.

I'm having problems with my internet link taking forever to do anything so will just keep this short and try to publish it.  I don't have any refashions to report at the moment but have started making inroads into the large piles of fabric that I have amassed over time which was the main reason I signed up. 

First up a Tunic dress from Burda magazine 8/2008. I'm pleased with how this came out and am wearing it today.  It's pretty loose fitting and the fabric I used is nice and drapey.

And a unlined, A-line jacket using Vogue pattern V8210 and a grey woollen fabric that seemed to like spreading fluff over everything while I sewed.

Another Scarf

Another scarf - this time crocheted from thrifted yarn in a lovely shade of sky blue, oh, so soft. Made the pattern up as I went along.

First exibition.

Last weekend me made through the first one( i have trouble to sleep away from home)...in apr. 6 weeks is the biggest one for us...

I use to decorate dolls for the entrance...my be not the most advanced project,but here in Sweden it soon will be necessary..a good old plumply scarf...okay this one is new...i made it from some test yarns i have been playing around with...but never got to be something,so i took them apart and made  a very long rib scarf...and of course you have decorate it too-with roses

Knitting needles size 12 ( European sizes) 3+1  2 different types of mohair yarn 

And of course my own Lady in red( Supreme commed Cashmere yarn 2+1 Kid light  some cheaper mohair yarn....the very red scarf is made from yarn stash too ( i somehow manage to start some things and then they end up to be something else...).That doll has a very small neck..it looks better on real person,it has black buttons at one end to make sure that windy days it stays on-to match it- red rose on very easy crocheted hat...

So as you can see there is some making going on...i have a great deal of plans to make and show to you...there in background for one,but that next time

This isn't much of a refashion, admittedly, but it comes down to this: crew necks don't suit me at all. So whenever I come across a dress or top I like in an op shop that has a crew neck, I change it to a v-neck.

So we're nearly 1 month into our pledges and I feel like I've done really well. I've bought fabric but fabric for me is cheaper than clothing! lol

I was raised Conservative Southern Baptist. For those of you overseas or not religious you may not know what this means. But to make it easy I wore skirts or culottes(shudder) most of my teen and child years. As a result I have pretty much been scarred by skirts for life. But I've come to learn my husband likes me in skirts. And if it get's attention from the hubs then it's a good thing! (at least for me.)

So I've been wearing skirts more lately. The first was made from some fabric from my stash. I'd bought 1 yard and it was one of the most expensive fabrics I've purchased. But I loved it so much I had to have it. I'd been struggling with what to do with it. I then thought "DUH, easy elastic waist skirt." So that's what I did. And it came out the perfect length. Clearly I'd been over thinking the whole thing.

  

I love it but I think I'm going to add pockets as I am lost without them to take my iPod and cell phone into the store. (Please disregard the state my sewing nook's floor is in.)

Next is the skirt that has been nearly a month in the making. The Hubs cleared out his stuff and gave the clothing all to me. (he's well trained and appreciates my thriftiness) So I had a bunch of button down shirts that I knew exactly what I wanted to do with. I've been eying Indietut's's tut for the piecework button down shirt to circle skirt: And so I set to work. I used 3 button down shirts, and one pair of stretchy pants from a thrift store rag bag that I'd been saving to make the skirt. I even pieced together strips to make the waistband.

 

I think my favorite parts of this skirt are the fact that I left the front pockets in so I have pockets! (YES) and the button panels. Though I do not like the drawstring waist. It's not quite what I wanted and so I'll probably change that to all elastic.
