So I'm still not done with the flamingo skirt, but I've vowed to finish it this weekend or die trying. This week was hectic, and I didn't have much crafting time, and what I did have got usurped by some small but necessary projects.
Project the first: a strap on my brand-spanking-new pair of shoes broke after only thirty minutes of wear (most of which was seated in my cube, so, like, five minutes total walking time), rendering them unwearable, since the strap was what kept them on my feet. Somewhat luckily, I work on a college campus, so I was able to run (or, rather, walk barefoot) to Student Stores and buy a pair of flipflops. (I say "somewhat" because 1-I'm not big on the college-branded merchandise, and they don't carry unbranded stuff anymore, and 2-the flipflops come in three sizes that fit most people, and the size that was closest to mine is still too big, so I spent the rest of the day tripping over them. But at least I wasn't barefoot. And I can probably trim the flipflops down with scissors, we'll see.) I debated returning the broken shoes, but decided in the end that they were really too cute and could probably be salvaged. And so they have!
The nice thing about this fix is I have several bits of ribbon in my stash that are just long enough to use with the shoes, and in a couple different colors I could switch out, if I felt like coordinating with my outfit. The only downside is, depending on the ribbon, I may have to re-tie them a couple times in the day, but I think I can live with that. I would like to repair the original straps, because they were pretty cute, too, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Here's the broken strap - anyone got any ideas? (I'm thinking maybe, since the pointy bit of the buckle has to basically go through the elastic, that it might be a lost cause, that any repair I make will just keep breaking. Hm.)
Project the second: the weather has been rainy and chilly lately - which I love, but my go-to sweater jacket would not stay buttoned. The buttons it came with were slightly too small for the buttonholes, and kept undoing themselves. I finally did what I should have done long ago, and replaced the original buttons with larger buttons that won't slip through the buttonholes. I bought a bag of assorted buttons a while ago - at this point I'm not even sure why, or what project I had in mind - but I found five matching buttons that were large enough to do the trick, and I quite like how it came out. There's no before picture because my camera was dead at the time and I was impatient to get started, but the original buttons were small and black anyway, so they probably wouldn't have shown up very well.
I should be back here Sunday night (or Monday, if I'm sewing all Sunday) to post the finished flamingo skirt. I'll definitely be checking back tomorrow and Sunday to see the new projects y'all have posted, to get re-inspired when I run out of steam because I'm impatient to have a new skirt already but have miles and miles to sew. Have a good weekend, refashionistas!
