Organization Breeds Creativity

Lemme give it to you straight. I've been remiss in my posting for two reasons:

1) Project stasis

2) Materials explosion

Allow me to explain. My project stasis stems first from a lack of want for new things. While refashioned items aren't new, per se, they do take up closet space. I considered this further in a recent post at my blog, Living Small. Feel free to read it.

Said stasis also stemmed from a lack of organization. Inspired by Penny's Feb. 10 post on corralling her knitting needle collection, I set to work on my own roundup: a bolts-and-bobbins roundup, that is. After realizing that my mishmashed sewing stuff was scattered far and wide — that is, as "far and wide" as it can get in my tiny house — I hunted and gathered all off it. Now, my crafting cabinet (a gutted hi-fi, really) is fit and ready to serve. Whee!

Here's what I've got:

  • A refashioned hem on a thrifted 1970s, puff-sleeved tweed jacket. It was elastic, which gave me the Michelin Man look; now, after a bit of pulling and ironing, it sits flat.
  • The back and front left panels of a Rowan tweed cardigan for the Mister. The pattern, "Jarrett" by Kim Hargreaves, hails from Rowan's Vintage Knits. A great book. Here's a photo of a cute boy wearing the sweater. Don't know him, but he sure looks nice in his cardi!
  • The inklings of my first quilt. A simple affair, made with these fabrics: Img_3883

Happy refashioning, all.

Thanks for your post. I agree 100% about not refashioning "just because" unless it is needed. I have been working on reducing my wardrobe to, not necessarily the minimum, but to only containing the items I need/want and love to wear. My aim is to have everything visible to me. What is the point of owning drawers and drawers full of tops, sweaters, t-shirts etc etc?? Equally, what is the point of making/refashioning more stuff that isn't really needed? How many black skirts does one need? With this in mind, my own personal goal is to make the items that are missing from my wardrobe and to use up the fabric I already own, and, finally to GIVE AWAY everything that is not used. Best wishes.
