Under the Sea dress
I have a big event coming up next week and need a dress to wear. I was originally thinking of using my Get out of Jail card for this one, but then I thought that I might as well take a crack at making a nice dress first. I had picked up this pattern, McCall 5317, for $.99 a while back, and figured with the right material, it would be suitable for the occassion. At the fabric store, I picked up two different fabrics - the cream is going to become a combo of Views B & C (I'm putting the lace detail at the waist and also adding the sleeves), and the darker fabric will be my party dress. Unfortunately, I was so in love with the colors of the second fabric that I failed to notice its a SEA CREATURE print!!! It's got fish and starfish all over it! Not crazy about that, but I'm too cheap to buy more fabric. I'll look into the store's return policy, but otherwise I figure, screw it, I'll just call it my Under The Sea dress and pretend I did it on purpose!

Fabric stores usually don't let you return fabric cut from the bolt. Look at it this way, if you didn't notice the sea creatures, likely no one else will either! It will look cute, don't worry.

yeah, I wondered about that, but want to check it out since it wasn't technically "cut" - it was the last 2 yards off the bolt. They didn't cut it for me; I just took the remainder. We'll see. I have to stop into a different location of that chain to look for tricot today as the first store was out - maybe I'll find something reasonably priced that I like better. It's pay day, thank goodness. :)

Joann Fabrics will refund yardage if it hasn't been washed or cut at all. But I say go for it, if you like the colors!

Just found this place -- how cool! :) I am a custom seamstress by profession, and I am just *tickled* to find a bunch of folks making/re-making/creating with their clothing. This place totally ROCKS.
I just wanted to add my 2 cents as Hancock also will allow return of uncut unwashed fabric. They do ask you to take it to the cutting table to be re-measured, but they'll do it. Smaller, independent fabric stores usually can't do that since their customer base is much smaller.
That said, I think the fabric is very cool. :) It doesn't scream "Under the Sea" to me, probably because of the color scheme. Unless you are completely turned off of it because of the design (which is actually fairly subtle), I say go for it. I personally really dig seeing unusual prints/designs in clothing.
