My First Garment
I have made my first garment since signing up to the pledge in June. I have not made anything since I left secondary school (which I am very sad to say was 18 years ago). A dear friend lent me a pattern for a very simple tiered skirt. I purchased the fabric and elastic from the Reverse Art Truck . For those of you who don't know Reverse Art Truck is a non profit organisation in Melbourne which collects rejects, seconds and factory offcuts and sells them per garbage bag. I think the fabric that I used was actually offcuts from upholstery fabric.
Although my friend's instructions were detailed and easy to follow, I pretty much had to do each step twice as I mucked it up the first time. For example, I omitted to note the comment "cut on the fold" and then had to ring my friend to say that this skirt was never going to fit my daughter as the first tier was so tiny. However I did make it through to completion and although it still won't fit my daughter (it is too big for her this year) and I know that I could do it a lot better next time round, I did feel quite proud of myself!
