Here is my first sewn garment in fifteen years, and probably my first skirt ever. (Please excuse the self-portrait photography!) I made it to wear to a party that my husband and I are having this weekend to celebrate our marriage (since we didn't have a real "wedding"). When he came into my studio and asked what I was doing, I told him I was making my wedding dress! I took a couple of shortcuts while making this skirt, partly because I was in a hurry to get it done and partly because I'm not very confident in my sewing skills. The pattern is from Wendy Mullin's Sew U, but I only used the front pattern piece and I cut it out twice. I made an elastic waistband rather than putting in a zipper, so I didn't need a two-part back. This meant that I only had to sew seams on the sides. I also avoided hemming by using the selvedge as the bottom edge. I know this is totally wrong, that the selvedge is supposed to go lengthwise, but I liked the way it looked and hemming makes my skin crawl.
