Hello Refashionistas!
I'm a Mum, wife, student and used-to-be lawyer living in Sydney. Above is a hat I've designed. And this is my blog. I've been thinking about joining you guys for a while now and here's why:
I'm not joining for ecological reasons. Ah, *stares at feet* um, well, truth be told: environmental concerns are major reason, but I feel that being 'green' really is a bandwagon, if the current Australian Prime Minister has just jumped on. (If you need a little background to Australian politics, this article sums up my feelings well).
I'm not joining because I can't find clothes that fit - I had to follow a strict diet during both my pregnancies, and as a result I've actually lost weight. (Yay!)
I'm not joining because I think sewing my own clothes will be cheaper ... I doubt it. Not if I want to use natural fibres in interesting patterns and definitely not if a cost my time ... I'm certain factory machines could knit a sock far quicker than me (particularly as I've not tried knitting socks yet!)
So after much thought, I've worked out why I want to join Wardrobe Refashion and make my own clothes ... I want POWER! Yes, I'm just as power-hungry as your local politician! Seriously, since I was a child I have wanted to make all the things I use, or at least to know how to make them. The Good Life has a lot to answer for - I didn't see it as comedy as a kid, I saw it as reality. So how much can I make? Food: I'm working slowly on growing my own food. Shelter: the time's not right (financially) to build my own house, but I might one day. Clothing: yup, that's why I'm here. Entertainment: I actually know how televisions work and I've made community TV programs (camera work, editing, presenting, script writing etc), I'm now studying how computers work.
And I've realised ... my somewhat worn-out corporate clothes aren't appropriate anymore, I didn't actually buy many student clothes, and I don't want to wear my (limited) pregnancy wardrobe again for some time ... so if I've always wanted to make all/ most/ some of my clothes, now's the time!!!
