baby step....

Hi guys

Haven't been very good at getting stuff finished.....but I do have a lot of things started; they're just simmering you know;)

And because I haven't got that much finished, I thought I may as well post pictures of accessories as well so it looks like I've actually achieved more (just cheering myself up, I know).

Picture_002_1 First up: 3 kleenex holders made from various recycled clothes, bedlinen, curtains and some left-over sari textile given to me by an Asian friend. The ribbons  were taken off gifts I have received.

Picture_004 Second: a paper bead necklace made from origami paper a Japanese friend gave me and a flower calendar page from an outdated calendar. Button was salvaged from an old shirt and thread was given to me by my boyfriend's grandmother.

Picture_009 Third: this is actually not for me. It's for my sister who requested something to cover her second-degree burns on her right hand (happened recently, poor thing). Obviously had to make a pair: not just the one mitten. I photographed my left hand as I had to hold the camera, somehow (and I'm right-handed).

Reasons for mittens: my sister thinks her burns look awful (which I don't) and her skin is still very sensitive so I therefore made them out of cashmere yarn (light beige) and silk yarn (dark beige). Both yarns were left-overs from my stash... better mail them over to her, now.

Well, that's it for now. Have actually knitted more than this but I need to cut thread ends and the likes. I have mended a tonne of clothes lately; #good on me#; but I guess they don't count as refashions.

Speaking of mending clothes; I have two requests:
1. does anyone know of an easy trouser tutorial/pattern? I have mended friction holes on my pants 5 times now and I think the fabric is getting so thin it will rip straight through to my "derrière" shortly.
2. how do you mend stupid moth holes in a beautiful knitted blanket that took you forever to knit? (I don't think I have any of that yarn left):

Otherwise I'm planning on making a quilted blanket for a friend who's having her baby in two months' time. Better wish me luck as I've never attempted the likes.

All the best to everyone and thanks for reading my ramblings:)

kimono pjs

Finishing these was my birthday present to myself. :D

Anyway, I'd gotten this flannel last year with the intent of making pjs, and finally got around to it--I basically finished last night, but had to readjust the elastic, so they're really done today. And sorry for the dummy picture-- I tried to get one of me modeling the sleeves but they all looked dumb because I have trouble taking pictures of myself.

Img_1646Img_1647 So there's one piece out of my stash!!

I also have a stupid newbie  question-- I'm still planning on not buying any new fabric for myself during this pledge, but is buying fabric within the rules, period? I ask because I have some baby gifts to deal with (one friend just had her baby tonight, and another is due in May-- I hadn't made anything for the first one yet because I told her and her husband I wouldn't until I knew if it was a boy or girl.) And I seriously have nothing appropriate for a baby boy, at least.  (Also, if any of you moms out there have pattern suggestions for something along the lines of overalls that would work for a boy, I'd really appreciate it. When it comes to sewing for kids, I'm rather clueless since I don't have any of my own or any nieces/nephews, and looking at the big company pattern sites, it seems like the overwhelming majority of clothing patterns are for girls. Thanks in advance for any help!)

MY QUICKIE :)

Monday, February 26, 2007

Here is a quick refashion that I did from an old necktice in my stash. Have gotten lots of compliments on it. I got the idea from this book called "Sew Subversive" by Melissa Rannels, Melissa Alvarado and Hope Meng. It's a definite book for the refashionista....Will use the other end to make a matching neck collar....

Toddler T

Ok..well this weekend was a little busy but I did manage to make a cute shirt for my son..its a racing shirt that was made for Bean's Cafe here in Anchorage, AK. It was a small men's shirt that was bought at the thrift store for $1.99. I cut it down to fit my son... :) I cut off the sleeves and used once of his old shirts as a pattern......then i cut down the body of the t to fit him but left the original neck opening.....then reattached everything and sewed the hem on the bottom...

Some Quick Embellished T's

My daughter was in need of a few more t-shirts that weren't four inches too short. I had saved one of her old t-shirts that was not only too small, but too stained to be passed on to little sister. I saved it because the flowers were embroidered and very cute.

I also found one of my old, stretched out t-shirts I had saved because of the cute flocked design on the front.

I cut out both designs and zig zagged stitched them onto two plain shirts I had purchased for her back in the fall (when my "contract" with Wardrobe Refashion was lapsed but anticipating the fact that I would probably do it again). I think this is probably cheating, but the shirts turned out nice and are half reused. It was also a super quick project that I started and finished one morning while the kids ate breakfast.

And that is three...

I forgot to post these. I was struck by flu last week and this top was made just before. I somehow thought I posted...anyhooo... As you can see, it's my favorite pattern again! This is the original neckline from the pattern, round with a slit. The pictures aren't that great but I guess you get the idea by now. Knit fabric, popular pattern top, rinse, repeat.

Popular pattern

Again, a little knit shirt from the pattern I used before. The pattern is really easy, just three parts. You can read the full story here . More to come from this popular pattern.....

Outfit for my daughter

Its been awhile since I've posted here, but I have been making a lot of things!  Unfortunately, I don't have internet access atm 'cause my laptop got hit by lightning (can you believe it?) and that's why I haven't posted.

Anyway, here is a pic of the outfit I made for my daughter.    She wanted a twirly wirly skirt like the 50s dress I made for myself so this is what I came up with.

As usual, all materials used in this outfit were made using recycled materials - including thread and button! (Full details on my blog for those who are interested).

Here is a pic!
Dress_only I've also made a few other things - reconstructed a pair of jeans for my daughter, an outfit for my son, and 2 bags.  I will put up pics of them as soon as I get organised and actually take my camera AND my cable to my mum's place. (I'm using her computer atm until I get another laptop/computer.)

WORK IN PROGRESS

For those that remember the camo ruffled skirt...I found a shirt to match in hubbie's closet. I shortened it and covered the collar with some fabric from the stash. Will be adding cuffs from the same fabric, too. Haven't quite decided what I am going to do with the hem. Definitely will be removing the blue tape! Based upon all of this, I will this a work in progress. Will post the completed pixs soon w/ the skirt to boot.  More on doubletsewdiva.blogspot.com.

Another quick singlet

Image000....ok... I've decided, that making simple summer clothes is a great way to de-stash :-) I didn't have enough of any ONE fabric to make this singlet, so made it in two. The fabrics were both left over from some shorts/bike pants that I made for my girls over 10 years ago!  :-D
The pattern was from a 2006 Burda magazine, and again, was easy and quick to make.
...slowly, but surely, I will reduce my stash!! (and hopefully have a stack of new clothes in its place!)
...Linda :-)
