August 2013 will go down in history as the month of costumes here at chez nikkishell. With a school concert coming up in September I have 2 out of 3 classes to sew for with a total of 43 children. Thankfully there are some other Mums helping out!
Then there's book week this coming Friday which means 3 more costumes. I have 2 finished, just one more to go.
I'm so pleased with how Heidi's 'Alice in Wonderland' costume has turned out. What's even better is how little it has cost to make. I picked up a remnant of the blue fabric from Rathdown Fabrics & Remnants for $7 and used only half of it for the dress. The white pleated trim is from a big bag of haby I bought at a garage sale a while back, the back fastens with velcro and the neckline is bound with a bias binding both from my stash and the sleeve elastic is from a bag of haby given to me by my good friend Jus. The apron is made from an old white sheet.
All she needs is a black hairband with a bow and some black shoes (not sure where I'll get those from!)
For Mia I have made a Katniss Everdeen costume. We found some cargo pants, a top and boots in the depths of her wardrobe. I made a Mockingjay pin from a cereal box and a bow and arrows using branches and twigs found in the garden. The only thing I needed to sew was a quiver to hold the arrows which was made with fabric from the stash.
I have to say, I'm rather pleased with my bow making skills!
Now I just have Esme's costume (Pippi Longstockings) to make for this Friday, 11 waistcoats and 21 Egyptian tunics, collars and belts to finish by next weekend and 80's costumes to put together for myself and Kev for the school trivia night.
Roll on September!
