This is my favourite kids Japanese pattern book. Remember this outfit i made for Heidi?
There are so many cute and practical patterns in this book and i plan to make many of them. First up is this jacket for Esme.
Pattern: Handmade for Children
Main fabric: 70cm Silver Croc (50%wool/35% viscose/15% poly) $38pm 150cm wide
Lining: 70cm Liberty Daisy Dobby Tana Lawn (100% cotton) $44.05pm 137cm wide
Buttons: 4 x corozo nut 28mm $2.97 each
All fabric and buttons from Tessuti Fabrics
The finer details:
- I made the largest size and was concerned it would be too small due to the measurements in the book but it turns out it's more than fine, in fact there is a little room for growth.
- I lengthened the sleeves to wrist length for warmth.
- I used snaps for closure instead of button holes for two reasons, i used large buttons and my machine does not make buttonholes that large and to make it easy for her to fasten it up herself.
- I matched the button colours to the lining.
- This was so easy to make. The most time consuming part was the hand stitching of the cuffs and snaps.
We received a delivery of new Japanese cottons at work yesterday and i already have a number of them picked out for some other patterns from this book. I seem to be on a roll with the kids clothes (which are much needed right now) and the girls are pleased with my efforts so i'm going to go with it.
side note: Although it may not seem it in the photo, Esme is happy with her jacket. She was objecting to me making her stand in the rain for a photo and got rather grumpy with me to the point where her arms were crossed, her eyebrows fell to her knees and she put on a pout to put all other pouts to shame. (She sooo takes after her Dad!)
