If you have kids then you'll know how hard it can be when they ask for things every time you go near a shop. Mia is particularly bad with this. Any amount of explaining the value of money to her has made no difference...so far. Like all kids she thinks money is never ending, if you have no cash in your wallet then the bank will give you some.
My girls like to visit Mandrake & Willow on a daily basis and have become very good friends with Souraya in particular. On a visit a few weeks ago Mia discovered a My Little Pony singlet and begged for us to buy it for her. Now i'm not a fan of licensed clothing but i thought that i could turn this into a lesson in money management. So, at the age of 5 and a half Mia had her first layby with the understanding that to make money to pay it off she must help out around the house.
She has worked her butt off to make the $16 needed to pay it off. She has helped out around the house and came to work with me twice where she put fabrics away, cleaned and served the customers. I promise there was no child labour involved! ;)
She's so pleased with herself and i'm very impressed with her determination. She also seems to understand the meaning of money a little better now too, let's hope it lasts!
