Shari dress-part 2

I've been working on the Shari dress this past few weeks and had hoped to get it finished this week.
P1000972
But once i sewed in the invisible zipper it seemed i had a problem, the back of the dress above my waist was bunching up, ugh!  My bum must be growing along with my bump!
Shari_back_gaping_2
Ideally i should have widened the back of the skirt the same way i did the front but since i didn't i need to figure out a way to fix it.

Any ideas?

So this week's task is to fix the bunching problem then sew the hem.
You can read my column on BurdaStyle here and see the how-to for Shari so far here.

In other fabulous news, Wardrobe Refashion is Typepad's featured blog today (31st)!  If you have come over to visit from there, welcome and please feel free to look around :)

Got it covered

P1000920

New ironing board cover.
I took the old one off and pulled out the cord that goes around the edge to fasten it to the board.  I added a new layer of batting using some scraps i had left over from other projects.  I then lay the old cover onto the new piece of fabric, cut it out and sewed around the edge with a zigzag stitch while catching the cord in the zigzag.  A new cover!  About time isn't it, my old one was in tatters.

There must be something in the water

Not only were we mentioned in Frankie this week but Mixtape was also mentioned in the A2 pullout of The Age on Saturday!

Today is Esme's 2nd birthday.  How time flies!

We went trick or treating along our local shopping strip today, there were heaps of witches, ghosts and skeletons and other scary creatures taking part.  My girls went as scary fairies although you can't quite see Esme's outfit in this photo.  They insisted on being fairies and didn't quite grasp the concept of Halloween being scary so to compromise i made them fairy skirts from some black netting covered in sliver spiders and webs, Ta Da! Scary fairies!  Collecting lollies must be hard work because as you can see she ended up like this halfway through.

Happy birthday Bab!

:)

How cool is this?!  We're in the current issue of Frankie!
We'll also be mentioned in The Age this Saturday so be sure to check it out.
We're having a little get together on Saturday night, some crafty girls have offered to help out with putting issue 2 together.  We'll be posting on Monday.  If you haven't already ordered your copy head over here NOW to do it, you don't want to miss out on all the goodness do you?  We also have issue 1 for sale again for those of you that missed out first time around.

Shari dress-part 1

Sharidress_part1

This week for my BurdaStyle column i started work on the Shari dress.  Of course i needed to make a few alterations to allow for my growing bump and you can see these in step 2 of my how-to.  This pattern requires piping which i made myself using this tutorial.  It was my first time sewing in piping and i'm rather pleased with the results.  I've really enjoyed sewing this dress, It seems my sewing mojo has finally returned, hooray!  I plan to have this dress finished by next week, just the zipper and sleeves to sew in and the hem finished at the right length which will be below the knee.
Shari is also the pattern we are using for the current sewalong, if you want to take part there's still time, we'll be working on this dress for another 2 weeks.  I'm finding this dress pretty easy to make, it just requires some patience while pinning all the pieces together.

We're having............

........another GIRL!

Baby_prested_19w

19 weeks down, 21 to go!  All is well, baby is growing perfectly.  I wonder who she'll look like?  Now we need to think of a name.

Christmas postcard swap sign-up's closed

We have 32 participants for this postcard swap!
I will divide the 32 into 4 groups, each participant will send and receive 8 postcards.  You will not receive from who you send to.

I will send emails out tomorrow with names and addresses for each of your swap partners.  We have about 5 weeks in which to make our cards.  Please have them sent by December 1st so they reach your swap partners in time for Christmas.

And remember, no buying!  The postcards you make MUST be made from recycled materials or stuff you already have in your stash.  Why not spice things up a little?  Who says they have to be rectangular?  or flat?  Be adventurous!

PS. Anyone want to make a little button for this swap to go in the sidebars of our blogs?

Blog Action Day update

Thanks for all your comments on my 'Blog Action Day' post about over consumption.  Like i said in my post, we by no means think we're perfect, FAR from it infact but we're trying to make a difference with the small things that we do and our lives are happier by doing so.  After reading many other Blog Action Day posts in blogland i've come up with a few new things to try out:

~Buy dried beans, pulses and grains more often rather than buying in tins.
~Take paper bags (recycled) to the grocery store when i plan to buy fruit and vegetables, or loose goods such as the beans and grains mentioned above instead of using their plastic bags.  We have a our fruit and veg delivered once a week in a cardboard box and no bags, they then take the box back to be reused.
~Sew my girls (and myself) some summer clothes now that the weather is starting to warm up.  I'm came across this gorgeous skirt tutorial today and will be whipping a few up with fabrics from my stash.   I'll also be digging out  my Japanese craft book to sew up a few dresses, skirts and headbands and my vintage/retro patterns to make some shorts and tops.
~Start buying organic more often.  We find organic a little too expensive for our budget but i'd like to make a gradual change over if we can.
~Eat more vegetarian meals, although we probably eat meat 2 to 3 times a week i'd still like to try and reduce that.
~We consume quite a lot of dairy-milk, eggs, butter for baking, cheese.  I don't think we'd be willing to reduce what we do consume but we buy our milk from the milkman supplied by Aussie Farmer's and we eat free range eggs.  I suppose we could change to organic eggs and butter but i'm not sure how that would fit into our budget.
~Grow our own food.  I'd LOVE to move to the country, build a straw bale house and live a simpler life.  We'd have chooks and a big veggie patch, rain water tanks, solar panel's, a composting toilet and everything else that comes with being self sufficient.  Until then we have to make do with what we've got which isn't much, we rent so there's no chance of rainwater tanks, solar panels or a composting toilet.  We have a garden at the front with a few olive trees and 3 nectarine tree's but out the back is mostly concrete.

The front- these pic's were taken last year, it's a lot tidier now...sort of:)
Side_of_house
The side of the house where our compost bin now lives and a possible place for the veggies?
There's also this little piece of grass that could be a possibility

Today the girls and i got busy making pots from newspaper using this tutorial and planted some seeds.
P1000632
We planted some lettuce in a large plastic box we had lying around the yard and in the pots we planted two kinds of tomato and broccoli.
P1000645
We have a number of other seeds to plant too but need to buy more supplies.  I may try a no-dig garden like i planned last year but never got around to or i may ask my gardener to dig over somewhere in my garden, not sure how much he'll charge for that.  I'm not doing it and i doubt Kev would be willing, i could bully him though which is what i normally do :P
Paper_pots
If you're interested in starting your own garden the next issue of Mixtape will have an article on the subject written by Sooz.  You can order your copy here which will be hitting the streets the first week in November.  I have no clue what i'm doing, i'm just giving it a go and hoping for the best, plus the girls are enjoying it and it get's them outside instead of bugging me to watch a dvd.  Get outside and plant something, you may find you have green thumbs you never knew you had!

PS. i'm going to be visiting the Save water, save energy expo tomorrow morning.  I'm hoping to be there around 10-11am and have a 2 for one voucher for admission.  If anyone os going along and would like to share this with me please email me today.

Shari dress

I'll be altering the Shari dress pattern this week and sewing it up over the next few weeks.
Shari_dress
If you pop over to my column on Burdastyle you can let me know what you think of my possible alteration and tell me if you think it will work or if you have any alternatives.  I also have a selection of fabrics for you to help me choose from too so head over there and leave me a comment.
We have also started a new sew-along which is the dress i am making.  To take part go here and let us know what your plans are, your fabric choices, any alterations you may make and ask any questions you may have.  We will spend the next 3 weeks working on this pattern.
Happy sewing!
